Proud member agency of the United Way
of Grant and Blackford Counties
Services for the Visually and Hearing Impaired, Inc has been serving those with sensory loss in the
Grant and Blackford County area for many years. Originally an offshoot from the Grant County Workers
for the Blind, Mrs. Evelyn Meyer saw a need for the agency to provide service to those with a visual
loss and it was largely through her efforts that the agency came into being. When Mrs. Meyer recognized
the needs of those with a hearing loss, she incorporated services for those as well.
The agency provides four basic programs:
-
Education - This includes our sign language classes to the public, presentations to civic groups,
schools, churches and organizations, and the TV show “Focus On Independence” which is available on
local access cable.
-
Prevention - This program provides vision screenings to children in schools and day care facilities
with the assistance of a variety of local eye care professionals who volunteer their time to perform
a “modified clinical exam” for the children. Additionally, we offer hearing screenings to anyone age
3 and older. Our equipment is portable and can be utilized anywhere that an outlet and a quiet room
can be found.
-
Assistance to the Individual - This is our most vital program that allows us to meet with the person
experiencing a sensory loss and to assist them in learning coping skills and providing them with needed
independent living aids.
-
Financial Assistance - Through this program, we can enable those with an financial need to obtain prescription
glasses, hearing aids or independent living aids.
-
The current executive director, Linda J. Taylor, has been with the agency since September of 2000 and has
served as the director since July 2001. Our office is located in the Fall~Meyer Center, 2301 S. Adams St.,
Marion, IN 46953.
